Lectures

Record on your phone or straight from the browser. A two-hour lecture becomes a page of text you can read in minutes, with a timecode for every point.

Interviews for coursework and theses

Research interviews and focus groups, transcribed with each speaker labelled, ready for analysis, quotes and the appendix.

⌕

Revision before exams

Search a whole semester of lectures for one term, and click the sentence to hear how it was explained.

Lectures you can search instead of rewatch

It's hard to listen, understand and write everything down at once. Record the lecture instead: on your phone, or with Deshifr's live mode in the browser, where the text appears while the lecturer speaks. Afterwards you have the full lecture as text, split into sentences, and clicking any sentence plays the recording from that moment.

Before the exam, you don't need to rewatch hours of recordings. Search the transcripts for a term, read the passage around it, and listen again only where it's unclear. Download a transcript as a .txt with a [mm:ss] timecode on every line and turn it into your own notes. Lectures in another language work too: choose the language the lecturer speaks when you upload.

Interviews for your thesis or coursework

Qualitative research means interviews, and interviews mean transcripts: commonly about four hours of typing for every hour of recording. Deshifr usually has the transcript ready in minutes, so that time goes into the analysis and the writing.

  • Who said what. Each change of speaker is labelled. Rename the labels to "Interviewer" and "Respondent 1", and the names appear at every turn, in the shared page and in the export.
  • Quotes you can check. Every sentence keeps its timecode. Before you quote a respondent in your thesis, click the line and hear exactly how it was said.
  • A transcript for the appendix. Download the interview as a .txt with timecodes, then format it the way your department asks.
  • Share it with your supervisor. Send a read-only link: your supervisor reads the transcript in the browser without signing up, and hears the recording only if you choose to include it.

Automatic transcription isn't perfect: names, terminology and people talking over each other can come out wrong. Read each transcript against the recording before you analyse it or quote from it.

Your recordings stay private

Uploads are private to your account: nobody else can play them, and deleting a transcript removes its text, its share link and the recording itself. Ask before you record: lecturers may have rules about recording their classes, and research interviews usually need your respondents' consent and your university's rules on storing research data. What happens to your files, and who processes them, is set out in our Privacy Policy.

Questions

Can I record a lecture right in the browser?

Yes. Start a live session and the text appears as the lecturer speaks; when you stop, the recording and its transcript are saved. Keep the page open and the screen on while recording. You can also record on your phone and upload the file afterwards.

How long can a lecture be?

Up to 4 hours and 2 GB per file, in m4a, mp3, wav, mp4, webm, ogg or flac. That covers a double lecture or a whole seminar.

Can I use the transcript in my thesis?

Yes. Download it as a .txt file with a timecode on every sentence and format it for your appendix the way your department asks. Check the transcript against the recording before you quote from it.

Does Deshifr tell the interviewer and the respondent apart?

Yes. Each change of speaker gets a label. Click it to rename the speaker, for example to "Interviewer" or "Respondent 2", and the name changes at every turn, on the shared page and in the .txt export too.

Which languages are supported?

More than 100, including English, Ukrainian, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Turkish. Choose the language of each recording when you upload it.
