From the recorder to the story

Upload the recording

A voice memo from your phone, a call recording, a video of a press conference. Pick the language the interview was in: Deshifr works with more than 100.

Find and check the quote

The transcript is split into sentences with timecodes. Click any sentence and the recording plays from that moment, so you can hear exactly how it was said before you print it.

↗

Share it with your desk

Turn on a read-only link and send it to your editor, fact-checker or co-author. They don't need an account, and the link stops working the moment you switch it off.

Stop retyping interviews

Transcribing by hand commonly takes about four times the length of the recording. An hour-long interview is an afternoon of pausing, rewinding and typing, before you've written a single line of the story. Deshifr usually has the full transcript ready in minutes, so the afternoon goes into reporting.

Automatic transcription isn't perfect, and Deshifr doesn't pretend to be: names, jargon and crosstalk can come out wrong. That is why every sentence keeps its timecode. You read the transcript, and wherever a line matters, you click it and listen to the original. Quotes stay accurate without listening to the whole recording again.

Built for how stories get edited

  • Read-only links for editors. Share the transcript with timecodes; the recording stays private to you unless you tick "Include the recording" for that link. Your editor can read it in the browser or download it as a text file.
  • Who said what. Each change of speaker is labelled; click a label to name the speaker, and the name follows every turn of theirs into the shared page and the export.
  • Switch sharing off any time. Turning a link off makes it stop working at once. Turn sharing on again and you get a new link, so the old one can't be reopened.
  • Export with timecodes. Download any transcript as a .txt file with a [mm:ss] timecode on every sentence, ready to paste into your notes or CMS, or as .srt/.vtt subtitles for a video story.
  • Interviews in other languages. Foreign-language sources, fixers' recordings, local radio: choose the language per upload, from Ukrainian and English to Japanese.
  • Delete when you're done. Deleting a transcript removes its text, its share link and the recording itself.

Your recordings stay yours

Sources trust you with what they say on tape. Uploads are private to your account: nobody else can play them, and a shared transcript includes the audio only if you choose to add it to that link. Shared transcripts are hidden from search engines. What happens to your files, and who processes them, is set out in our Privacy Policy.

Questions

How long does it take to transcribe an interview?

Usually a few minutes, depending on the length of the recording. Once the file has uploaded, you can close the page: the transcript appears in your list when it's ready.

Can my editor see the transcript without signing up?

Yes. Turn on sharing for a transcript and send the link. Anyone with the link can read the text with timecodes and download it as a .txt file. They can't edit anything, and they can only hear the recording if you choose to include it.

Does Deshifr tell the speakers apart?

Yes. Deshifr tells the speakers apart and labels each change of speaker: Speaker 1, Speaker 2, and so on. Click a label to give the speaker a name, like "Mayor", and it changes at every turn of theirs, on the shared page and in the .txt export too.

Which languages are supported?

More than 100, including English, Ukrainian, Spanish, French, German and Japanese. You choose the language when you upload; one recording is transcribed in one language.

How long can a recording be?

Up to 4 hours and 2 GB per file, in mp3, m4a, wav, mp4, ogg, flac or webm.

How much does it cost?

The Free plan includes 30 minutes a month. Pro: 400 minutes for $2.99 a month. Pro Plus: 1,100 minutes for $6.99 a month. Turbo: 1,600 minutes for $9.99 a month. Each plan stops at its minutes, so you never pay more than the monthly price; upgrade any time for more.
